Are you struggling to close your garage door?

An uncooperative garage door is a common inconvenience for homeowners, and there are a number of reasons why your garage door won’t close.

These reasons range from mechanical faults which can be repaired yourself to more complex issues that might require a professional who specialises in garage door repairs.

Here are some of the reasons why garage doors won’t close.

Faulty or obstructed sensors

Garage door sensors are located near the bottom of the door and send signals to each other, preventing the door from closing when they detect a person or object in the garage door path.

Sensors aren’t 100% foolproof, however and they may mistake a speck of dirt in their line of sight for a bigger obstacle. This can be solved by thoroughly cleaning the sensors.

Other times, a mechanical problem with the sensor can stop it from working correctly. Check to make sure both sensors are perfectly aligned, make sure they’re powered on and check for any wire damage.

If everything looks okay and the sensors are still not working, you may need to replace them.

Damaged door tracks and rollers

One of the most common issues that stop a garage door from closing are bent or broken door tracks and rollers.

Sometimes this can be as simple as removing a blockage that is preventing the rollers from working correctly or greasing the rollers.

While bent tracks or rollers can sometimes be repaired, they will most likely need to be replaced. If you’re unsure, it’s worth calling in a professional for an inspection.

Broken springs

Springs in garage doors are designed to last a certain number of cycles before they need to be replaced. Torsion springs will typically last up to 20,000 cycles, while extension springs last up to 10,000.

When the springs break, the garage door may become misaligned and won’t close properly. It can be dangerous to attempt to close a door with broken springs, so call a professional if this happens.
